It's been a few weeks since we first got the announcement about the Chrome Web Store. Google has started up a portal for downloading extensions and web applications to its Chrome internet browser. Last week Google unveiled its browser-based app store, the Chrome Web Store, featuring apps from major partners like Amazon, the New York Times, and EA. So Chrome os is a something of a portent of what the Mac App Store could become. As people unwrap their brand new iphones , ipod touches, and ipads this Christmas break, they’re quickly heading to the App Store. Web users who installed Googleâs Chrome for a Cause extension opened more than 60 million tabs from December 15 to 19, effectively raising $1 million on behalf of Google’s partner charities. After you sign in with your Google account, the same username and password you would use to access Gmail, you can pull up a home page showing all the apps you’ve installed from the Chrome Web Store. Google’s Chrome browser is noted for being faster and smaller than Microsoft’s Internet Explorer and Mozilla’s Firefox. That’s why it caught me by surprise when Gmail wouldn’t load in Chrome but would open without a problem in Firefox and IE. Googleâs Chrome os platform could potentially be a major headline-stealer in 2011. What would computing look like if there were no Windows and no Mac, but only Chrome os ? An interesting thought, especially if you think about how many loose ends Chrome os has. At long last, Google has opened its Chrome Web Store. The Chrome live event did not fail to impress today, and Google fans will be happy to see many predictions coming true. Itâs been less than a week, but already the Chrome Web Store is reeling in the users. Google’s Chrome Web Store goes live today with more than 500 apps at launch. The Google Chrome Web Store , which went live today, is a big gift to Web developers: it’s a marketplace, like Apple’s ios App Store and Google’s Android Market, that lets developers put their apps in a place where users and buyers are likely to be looking for them. Today, Google spent hours and hours unveiling its latest products, software, and features, but it all could have been summed up as follows: Chrome is the future of Google. Tweetdeck said this week that its Google Web Store app racked up 62,000 installations by nearly 46,000 users in its first three days.

LG have been providing mobile users with great phones for a number of years, and with the launch of the LG Optimus, they are trying to tap into the ever increasing demand for smartphones. With a healthy list of smartphone features, does the Optimus have everything it needs to compete in this market?
The Optimus is another example of LG’s ability to make good looking phones. The phone’s design and quality finish mean that, not only will you be more than happy to be seen using it, it is easy and comfortable to handle when you do; and even with a decent sized touchscreen, the phone is easily carried in your pocket or purse.
The touchscreen on the Optimus is smaller than some of the other smartphones at just 3 inches, but it’s big enough so that you can comfortably use it to view web pages, emails, photos and video. The touchscreen itself provides a nice clear and bright display, with a handy auto-rotate feature provided by the built in accelerometer.
As well as the standard connectivity options, including 3G and the latest Bluetooth, the Optimus is capable of wireless networking, just like many of the other smartphones. It also provides you with a fast and simple way to get connected to their favorite social networking sites, with pre-loaded features that keep you in touch with real-time updates from fans and followers on Facebook and Twitter.
Using the Android 1.6 version, the Optimus has a slightly outdated operating system when compared to some of the other Android phones on the market, but it is more than enough for an entry-level smartphone. Overall performance is excellent, and with your choice of apps from the Android Market, and good battery life, most users will find it is more than enough for what they need from a smartphone.
The only real downside to the Optimus is the 3 megapixel camera, which is a adequate if not outstanding in today’s smartphone market. The autofocus is a great feature that makes taking photos much easier, however there’s no flash, which makes shooting inside or in low light a little disappointing. The video capture is good, but it isn’t going to worry any of the bigger smartphones.
The likes of Apple, HTC and Google are not going to be overly worried about the challenge from the LG Optimus, but this would probably suit LG just fine. It can’t, and isn’t meant to, compete with the top smartphones. Instead, it is meant to be an affordable smartphone that offers most people what they want; something it does very well.
