The HTC Desire HD is one of the rare few phones that pack a powerful 1Ghz Snapdragon processor into an aluminum unibody casing. Place the sleek smartphone in your palm and you will easily notice the difference in solidity. Due to the architectural advantage, the phone is slimmer, sexier and much more durable when compared to most available cell phones.

“Tiny screens and squeaky sound couldn’t do justice to all the great stuff you can experience on today’s HTC Desire HD” – quoted from HTC’s description of the concept behind the Desire HD. It is indeed exhilarating to view movies, play games and surf the Internet on this phone. The 4.3 inch S-LCD capacitive touchscreen serves as a mobile theatre for all your entertainment needs. With the 480 x 800 pixel resolution, everything is displayed with sheer clarity.

Moving on from the screen, HTC has been extremely generous by including Dolby Mobile and SRS virtual surround sound in the gadget. It is prevalent that the HTC Desire HD is one of the few cell phones that offer such enriching multimedia experience. The imagination of a mobile cinema simply reminds you of an unfulfilled desire.

If you think HTC has done a great job with the multimedia viewing capabilities, you have not seen the best. At the back of the HTC Desire HD, you will find an 8 megapixel camera that captures pictures with remarkable resolution (3264 x 2448 pixels). The camera functions include HD video recording (720p), autofocus, dual-LED flash and face detection. What more can you ask for?

Apart from the superior multimedia capabilities, the HTC Desire HD comes with HTC Sense UI, a specially programmed interface that focuses on making life simpler. Take the usual embarrassing scenarios as an example; a quick flip of the Desire HD mutes the phone if it happens to ring during a meeting. Active social networking is further enhanced with the HTC’s Friendstream, an intelligent application that brings all your social networks together. Should you happen to lose your Desire HD, you wouldn’t have to worry about it. Log in to HTCSense.com and lock the cell phone remotely. Then, track the location of the cell phone through the Internet.

Here comes another pleasant surprise – The HTC Desire HD comes preinstalled with the latest Android operating system, version 2.2 OS. The new operating system is two to five times faster than the previous version and with the 1Ghz Snapdragon processor, performance is unrivalled.

The endurance of the battery has to be at its best to keep this multimedia machine going. HTC completes the package by supporting 9 hours of talk-time for the Desire HD. Aside from the battery strength, connectivity is also at its best with support for a 14.4 Mbps 3G connection. Now we understand why HTC named this flagship smartphone as the Desire HD.

LG have been providing mobile users with great phones for a number of years, and with the launch of the LG Optimus, they are trying to tap into the ever increasing demand for smartphones. With a healthy list of smartphone features, does the Optimus have everything it needs to compete in this market?

The Optimus is another example of LG’s ability to make good looking phones. The phone’s design and quality finish mean that, not only will you be more than happy to be seen using it, it is easy and comfortable to handle when you do; and even with a decent sized touchscreen, the phone is easily carried in your pocket or purse.

At 3 inches, the Optimus’s touchscreen is not the biggest on the market, but it is the right size for the phone and certainly doesn’t feel small when you are surfing the web or looking a photos and video. The high quality HVGA screen is bright and clear, and the accelerometer makes it easy to use the touchscreen capability in portrait or landscape.

One of the LG Optimus’s strengths is its excellent connectivity features, with the usual 3G and Bluetooth you would expect, plus the ability to connect to WiFi networks, which seems to be the minimum standard for any smartphone these days. The Optimus is a friendly smartphone as well, with features that provide real-time updates from the main social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.

The Optimus uses the Android operating system and whilst it is ideal for the level this smartphone is aimed at, future offerings from LG will have the more updated versions of this operating system, as well as other Google features. Using Android means you get to install lots of great apps from the Android Market, and good battery life and performance will mean that you enjoy using them as well.

The Optimus only has a 3 megapixel camera, which does let it down slightly, but it still performs well in most environments, especially with the autofocus making things easier. The lack of a flash and video capture at only 17 frames per second isn’t ideal, but it won’t stop most people getting what they want from the camera.

The likes of Apple, HTC and Google are not going to be overly worried about the challenge from the LG Optimus, but this would probably suit LG just fine. It can’t, and isn’t meant to, compete with the top smartphones. Instead, it is meant to be an affordable smartphone that offers most people what they want; something it does very well.
