Verizon Wireless is making a bold move that could force an industry trend. The wireless giant on Sunday announced a plan to repay as much as $90 million in refunds to 15 million cellular customers who were erroneously charged for data sessions or Internet usage. The announcement marks one of the largest customer-refund initiatives in telecommunications history.

"Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ) said it will pay up to $90 million to about 15 million customers as part of a massive refund program, according to a Fierce Wireless report, as they were mistakenly charged for accessing the Internet on their devices. The company said that many customers complained last year that they were charged $1.99 for mobile broadband access that they did not use. The company said that current customers will receive credits of between $2 and $6 in their October and November bills and former customers will receive refund checks. Verizon issued a statement that said the refund would go to customers without data plans that inadvertently accessed the Internet or initiated data exchanges. SmarTrend is bullish on shares of Verizon Communications and our subscribers were alerted to buy on July 27, 2010 at $28.52. The stock has risen 15.3% since the alert was issued."
